WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Couple and family relationships often provide their members great satisfaction and mutual emotional support, but they also can be sources of significant conflict and emotional distress. Clinicians who work with couples and families who are experiencing relationship problems must be skilled at engaging all of the relevant members in therapy, especially when they have different goals. Couple and family therapists also must be skilled in assessing and treating characteristics of the individual members, their interaction patterns, and sources of stress in their environment that are having negative effects on their relationships.  In individual therapy, therapists commonly hear the client’s reports about their marriage or family, but in couple therapy there are many opportunities to observe and intervene directly with interaction patterns during sessions.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) originally was designed to treat individuals, but it has been adapted to address the complex processes that occur in intimate relationships. Dr. Norman Epstein has been a pioneer in developing cognitive-behavioral assessment and treatment approaches for couples and families.  In this workshop he will describe and demonstrate CBT methods for assessing and treating distress in couple and family relationships, focusing on members’ cognitions, emotional responses to each other, and behavioral interactions.  Research studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT with couples and families.  The two days of the workshop will present CBT concepts and methods for working with both couples and families, but the emphasis will be on treatment of distressed couples.

The workshop will be presented in English and translated on-site into Japanese. There will be several question and answer periods during the workshop, although occasional questions for clarification will be addressed briefly at other points.
